Gauges for X-Ray thickness are used in the steel manufacturing industry to assess the thickness of steel spirals, billets, strips, and plates during production plants. These instruments inspect metallic products for consistency, quality, and regulation adherence. They determine the thickness of a formed metallic material without any technological adjustments or destructive processes. These instruments can work by detecting and absorbing X-rays through the desired metallic substance. They make precise thickness measurements and monitor the X-rays’ fluctuation through the material while employing a linear attenuation coefficient.

The change in instrumentation signal generation due to the level of radiation absorbed over time is directly related to and can be transformed into describing the substance’s thickness. The previous sentence only holds as long as the chemical composition and material density throughout the material under inspection is consistent. Global Gauge can develop a system built and manufactured for maximum efficiency and dependability for your application if you require a screening c-frame, scanning detectors inside a c-frame, centerline width evaluation, or profile width measurement. A critical parameter for multiple steel processes is bar and strip width measurement. Hot Rolling, Cold Rolling, Pickling, and Slitting are all processes dependent on the accurate bar and strip width measurements. 

In hot rolling, bar width is measured before the roughing mill stands to confirm incoming width and set the side guide system. The side guide system, typically a mild steel plate, is responsible for providing a uniform width thru the “bars” length. Bar width is also measured between and after the roughing mill stands as the bar is incrementally reduced down to the customer ordered thickness and cropped before the finishing mill.

Upon leaving the finishing mill, the “strip” width is measured before the coiler to confirm the width for the next processor for direct sale to the customer as a “hot band.” Accurate measurement of width in cold rolling is critical because this is the last stage of processing that influences strip width. For cold rolling, depending on the mill type, strip width is usually measured before the mill, between the mill stands, and after the mill. Errors that occur in cold rolling cannot be corrected in later processes.

Pickling and slitting processes are also dependent on accurate width measurement for both quality and to maximize yield. Width measurement is used for side trimming the strip edge in the pickling process. The slitting process width measurement is used to slit the strip into “multi.” Both methods depend on accurate width size to maximize yield while maintaining the customer ordered width. Steel manufacturing processes are trending to camera-based systems to measure bar and strip width.

These systems are incredibly accurate and provide real-time data. Camera-based techniques are also being utilized to detect gross defects, 2D dimensional profiling, and crop management.

As the steel manufacturing market in the USA has evolved, so have gauge suppliers. The USA-based gauge suppliers just haven’t been remarkably resilient over the years. This presents a real challenge to the American steel industry, as they have many measurement systems and x-ray gauges that can no longer be supported to provide end-users with the quality of the steel they need.

Hot Strip Mill:

Hot Strip Global Gauges are enclosed in stainless-steel c-frames and feature reliable detectors and cooling equipment to measure the width in the harshest conditions. Our gauges are single or dual gauges with one skimming and one center point gauge. As the material travels through all the frames, our clients can use the scanning function to get an insight into their strip profile.

Plate Mill:

Global Gauge Plates are the denser products encountered on our clients’ plate mills that necessitate special gauges. Our gauges have a fully automated gauge control and exact plate width and weight information. We provide multi-thickness meters that enable our customers to view how their sheets are rising or squeezing toward the center or sides, improving plate quality and allowing automatic gauge adjustment.

Cold mill:

We provide customized solutions to your individual rolling or processing demands in Cold Mills and Processing Lines (pickling, strengthening, cutting, etc.). Global Indicator Cold Mill Width Gauges are low-cost devices that don’t require stainless steel frames and are frequently PC-based, decreasing the system’s complexity and expense. The legacy c-frame can often be recycled, resulting in significant cost savings for the customer.
